  • Purpose of Maintenance: The maintenance is preventative and aimed at ensuring plant availability.

Jo’burg City residents will face a disrupted water supply from 22 June until 29 July 2024, that’s according to a notice released by Rand Water on 3 June 2024. The most recent communique by Johannesburg Water alerts residents in areas supplied by the Eikenhof and the Palmiet pumping stations, as well as the Daleside booster station, these areas will experience low water pressure and may also have no water at all, for the next 37 days.

The disruptions are caused by infrastructure maintenance. Rand Water says the maintenance is preventative and is meant to ensure “plant availability”.

The disruption could be longer than the stated 37-day period after Johannesburg Water notified residents that, “recovery can take between five and 14 days after the supply has been fully restored.”

As a result of the maintenance, Joburg City issued a reminder and advised residents to stock up on water, for when low water pressure or taps completely run dry, is experienced. The city also emphasised that the disruption will not be a water shutdown.

According to the schedule for water flow disruptions, the pumping stations and distribution systems that will be affected are Zwarkopjes Pumpstation, Eikenhof Pumpstation, and the Eikenhof system, and Palmiet System.

The Johannesburg residential areas supplied by Eikenhof Pump station is “Soweto, Randburg/Roodepoort, Commando, Lenasia, parts of Johannesburg central (including Eagles Nest, Crown Gardens, Aeroton, and Alan Manor).”

The Eikenhof Pump station will pump water at 50% for 8 hours and will then see an increase in pressure to 67% for the remainder of the 64 hours between 24 to 27 June. The Eikenhof System will operate at 83% pressure for 15 days between 26 to 13 July 2024.

The Palmiet Pump Station supplies reservoirs servicing Sandton, Midrand, South Hills Tower, Alexandra Park, Randjieslagte, and Linksfield. This pump station will be affected on three separate dates with different pressure levels. On 1 July pressure will be at 60% for eight hours.

On 15 July, the pressure will be at 68%, and then on 29th July the final date of the maintenance, the pressure at Palmiet System will be at 76%.

It is not yet clear if the pressure will be restored to full capacity between the dates specified by Rand Water.

Daleside Pump Station supplies reservoirs in Orange Farm, Ennerdale and Lawley and was not pumping water for four hours on Monday, 24 June 2024.

The rest of the affected areas included the Johannesburg CBD, Hector Norris pump station, Berea, Yeoville, Parktown and Foresthill, which have reservoirs serviced by the Zwartkopjes Pump station. Here, water will be pumped at 50% on 24 June 2024.
