On 8 November 2024, four shacks in Motsoaledi were washed away by heavy rains, leaving four families homeless after they had built their shacks next to a river that overflowed.
Sello Mahlangu explained that he noticed a lot of water coming in from the bottom of his shack. When he stepped outside, the water pressure was so strong that it washed his shack away, taking all his important documents, bed, and personal belongings with it. He feels devastated, especially since he is alone without family support and now has to start over.
Ntando Ndlovu (16), said this happened at a terrible time for her because she was busy studying for her exams. All her books and uniforms are destroyed, making it hard for her to prepare for the rest of her remaining exam papers.
Community members came together to help those affected, they donated food, toiletries, clothes, and are even assisting in rebuilding the shacks. The heavy rain was unexpected and caused serious damage to the lives of many people in the community. They hope the rains will stop, as they need to rebuild their lives.
