On 4 September 2021, the community of Lawley (south of Johannesburg) joined hands to help a family who’s shack was on fire. The family was known to have been disadvantaged at the time all their belongings got burned in the fire. The man living there is in his late 50’s, is unemployed and he lives with his daughter, Rose Zinya, who is 16 years old. Neither of them were home when the fire started but luckily the community of Lawley came together and organised buckets of water near the burning shack and put the fire out.
The following morning the community organised themselves to help put the shack up again and clean up all the burned belongings of the family. Every household within the community helped the family by donating all they could. Thuto- Lefa Secondary School helped the family by donating groceries, and the youth movement of the Patriotic Alliance also helped with donations of food and clothes.
Zinya said she was very grateful for how the community helped her and her dad, especially under their situation.
