Since South Africa is slowly moving to a 4th industrial revolution, education is now mostly happening online and applying for children in Gauteng has also moved online. However, for most people in working class communities, the struggle of using these services is serious, because they either don’t have smart-phones or electricity. Even if they have smart-phones, it’s pointless because they struggle with data and airtime.
High school learners especially grade 12 students, they are struggling to do their homework or revisions because they don’t have smart-phones and sometimes there’s no electricity and the network is affected. The pace at which the 4IR is moving, demands schools and the community to work together to solve issues that are hindering the progress of learners at schools. Communities can’t sit helpless and watch the problem escalates.
Another issue is the water crises in our communities. Government officials do not communicate with the people when water issues arise, especially because many people do not have watertanks to sustain themselves during watershedding. In many communities around Johannesburg water truck takes time to come and people are always frustrated and helpless in this situation.
Infrastructure is a serious issue too, clinics are dilapidated and are very far from the communities, people walk long distances to get health services. It’s time we work together as a community, so we solve these issues. By working together, we can find solutions and not wait for the government, we can change things in our community and mostly develop this country.
