Corporates exploits Reclaimers

Residents and businesses in Sunninghill, Johannesburg, donated tricycles and uniforms to 12 members of the African Reclaimers Organisation (ARO).

While the tricycle is a prototype intended to make it easier for reclaimers to move materials, it is not actually able to carry as much as reclaimers carry without it (using their trolleys).

Businesses in the area will use the tricycles for advertising purposes, and will pay a fee for this. But it is unclear how reclaimers will benefit from this arrangement.

ARO members were not consulted in the design and building of these tricycles though they had been informed of the plan. The handover event was widely covered by the media and the City of Johannesburg stakeholder manager was in attendance.
