In October 2023, in King Williams Town, civil organisations gathered for a two-day workshop in the Eastern Cape. Day one was outlining the crisis that is happening globally, nationally, provincially, and locally.
Civil Organisations were separated into commissions where they were given topics to talk about. The topics included unemployment, budget cuts (austerity)and income grants. Part of the discussion was to come up with ways of keeping momentum as civil organisations ahead of the interim structure that was elected before the march to the Provincial Treasury.
Mthetheleli Mathubu, the labour community media forum representative of Amandla in Port Elizabeth said, “All the civil organisations have a common vision of building the next generation of South Africa. A generation that is full of life and optimism. Over the past two days I’ve managed to gain a lot of insight – meeting people and activists who came from different backgrounds.”
About 300 members of civil organisations from all over the Eastern Cape. Day 2 was organised as the march to the Office of the EC Provincial Treasury for the handover of the memorandum to the Member of Executive Council (MEC). The MEC was not available to accept the memorandum, but there was a representative from his office to accept it on his behalf.
During the closing, Thulani Bukani, Secretary of Icora in Queenstown addressed the comrades. He said, “Thanks to all the comrades for coming.” He also stated that comrades should not let government officials get used to saying to us that the relevant person is not available when we want to submit our memorandums. The two-day workshop and march were a success as comrades departed with revolutionary songs.
