Download PDFRecently, the residents of Extension 9 in Joza, a location in Makhanda have been crying out for help because of smelly sewage flowing in front of their houses. The residents have been asking the local government to intervene and give them services to no avail.
Mrs Nozuko Mlatsha from of Extension 9 complains that it has been more than three years that they have been asking for help from the municipality. They want the sewage system to be fixed but there has been no action. It is hard for residents to open windows and doors for fresh air, the situation is dire because even the children are becoming sick because of this stream of raw sewage. They feel that the municipality is failing the locals.
Mr Siyabulela Matika who is also a resident of Extension 9 is not happy about the way the municipality is doing things. He says that the councillor is not doing anything while also the sewage is also passing in front of his house.
“It’s painful to sleep and wake up smelling the same thing, and we know it’s our everyday life. There is nothing that we can do. The leading party has been leading for more than 30 years but there is no change at all in our country,” observed Matika.
