Local Business Owner Targeted By Robbers

Johannesburg, South Africa - September, 24th 2013: African zulu man dressed in his traditional clothing, shopping at a spaza shop in Orlando, Soweto. Shop is made from an old shipping container with signs and posters seen stuck on. Burglar proofing for safety.

Local business owner Thulani Mazibuko from Kwa Thema ext. 2 of eKasi Spaza Shop was robbed early in the morning around 09:00. This occurred after his stock, like bread and cold drinks, was delivered. Every community member was shocked by what happened because no one saw anything except the children playing on the street.

“I am very heartbroken and traumatized because of what happened today. I wake up every day in the morning to open my Spaza shop so I can sell and put bread on the table for my children and wife,” Mazibuko shared after the incident.

Adding that, “ Those thugs came into my shop knowing I just got deliveries and they knew where I kept my money. It was like they were sent by people who know me. This is a major setback for me, my shop, and importantly my family.” A female community member who asked not to be named shared, “This is very shocking to all of us as a community because this happened without any witnesses. Only the kids say they saw a white van stopping at the spaza shop and three men entering the shop wearing black clothes.”

About the “witnesses” she added, “Knowing kids, they didn’t even think those people were robbers, this is a very heartbreaking tragedy in our community because a black man trying to do right by his family got stripped of what put bread on the table for his family.” Crime is getting out of hand in local neighbourhoods, and spaza owners are suffering, what is being done by our police – nothing, it seems.
