The community of Makhanda is experiencing water scarcity which has been going on for some time now and without a commitment to a solution.
Mr Ntlabathi told Karibu that he was informed by his family members that the water scarcity in Makhanda started way back, “I was not in the province but when I came back in 2017 to stay the situation was worse than the reports I have been receiving from people,” said Mr Ntlabathi.
The people most affected by the water crisis are the poorest as those of the upper classes in society can afford to buy water from water outlets and shops whereas the poor communities cannot afford this method of accessing water.
Corruption is the main reason for the lack of a permanent solution to the water crisis facing Makhanda, Bulelani said. This water crisis is making their lives very difficult as people who are earning a living from washing cars on the streets of Makhanda and trying to stay away from stealing and robbing people through this kind of work. But when there is no water; they cannot earn money, and they go home empty-handed. The intervention by the municipality of supplying water using water tanks does not cater to their kind of business, it only assists residential homes. This lack of service delivery emanates from corruption alleges Mr Ntlabathi.
