The pollution in the City of Johannesburg is worrying, say residents. The now permanent site of piles of garbage goes back to 2020 when the City lost control of pollution. On every corner, there is a huge pile of rubbish, affecting people walking by and sellers in Johannesburg.

“In the streets of Johannesburg pollution has become a norm,” said Gugulethu Sithole, who is a cleaner in one of the buildings here.

“Illegal dumping affects us a lot as businesses owners, the government should work hand in hand with the councillor of the city to employ as many workers [as] it can, to ensure that the city is been kept clean,” said Munwakwe Muambe, a barber in Johannesburg CBD.

Mr Muambe continuously says the pollution is affecting the health of his clients. “The pollution worries me a lot [be]cause sometimes it ‘pushes’ my customers away, [I] think the government is doing its best to keep the city clean though the matter of dumping seems to be getting worse.”
