On 31 July 2021, 23-year-old Thapelo Sehata, a member of the LGBTQ+ (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Trans, Queer) community was brutally assaulted and left for dead near the Helena Franz Hospital in Senwabarwana, Limpopo. Residents of the area found the young woman in the bushes near the hospital in the early hours of the morning and called an ambulance that took her to the hospital where she then passed on.

According to Brigadier Motlafela Mojapelo, the police have opened a case of murder and a full investigation will done. He also said; “The motive for the incident is unknown at this stage, but gender-based violence cannot be ruled out.”

As yet, no arrests have been made in connection to the crime and this does not sit well with activists in the LGBTQ+ community.

Lerato Mpokothi, an LBGTQ+ activist based in the Wattville area (on the Eastrand of Gauteng), said; “Our people are being killed left right and centre and we are now living in fear, we never know who is next.”

“As full members of our communities we deserve more protection from not just the justice system but also our community members that we live with. We have been having this conversation for too long and the time for talking is finished. Now action needs to be taken to protect the LGBTQ+ community, the time has come,” said Mpokothi.

With at least 17 other hate crimes against people in the LGBTQ+ community reported in South Africa in 2021 alone, it is clear that the Constitution of South Africa so highly praised for it’s “protection of LGBTQ+ rights” is but an illusion, especially for working class LGBTQ+ people.
