The Inner City Water Crisis

On Saturday, 01 July 2023, at Khanya College during a workshop, activists raised problems faced by the people who live in the inner city. One of those issues raised was the water cut-offs, so I decided to do an interview within the city on the issue.

Waka, age 28 years old, who works at City Ruby Hotel in the inner city but lives in Soweto, agreed to the interview. At the time of the interview, they had had cut-offs since Friday, 30 June 2023, and only got water back at 10:00 on Saturday, 1 July 2023. Waka said that they experienced water cut-offs so many times, some lasting for four hours in a day. But she as an individual has never had any communication about the water rationing so now they have backups in place.

They store water in buckets but when that supply dries up, they must now buy bottled water. Since this crisis has been plaguing the community, a place like a hotel must have a bigger backup like Jojo tanks and not just buckets to rely on. In some communities,  municipalities must drill boreholes as a backup.
