On 14 August 2024, two learners were left injured in a shooting incident that occurred at Willows Cresent Secondary School, in Eldorado Park, Soweto. On the same day in a separate incident one learner was stabbed at Lancea Vale Secondary School also in Eldorado Park.

Earlier that day it was reported that a learner who is a member of a well-known gang in the area, argued with his teacher, it is alleged that the learner ended up calling his gang to intervene and deal with the teacher. The gang came and started shooting looking for the teacher, luckily, he managed to run to the staff office for his safety.

Learners ran but also fought back with stones. Two learners were shot, and they were rushed to hospital. On the same day, in Lancea Vale Secondary School also a high school in Eldorado Park, one of the learners was stabbed by another learner during a violent incident.

“We are now scared for our lives and our teachers’ too, because they are also parents who left their kids and came to us”, said Andile Xaba (not her real name) from Willow Crescent Secondary School. The sudden gunshots disrupted the entire school’s routine, causing learners to run in fear. They jumped over fences to leave the school premises as teachers attempted to organise an assembly to protect learners.

This incident shocked so many people in the community especially the parents, they were scared for their children. Many of them rushed to fetch their children at school and to make sure they were safe.

For the rest of the week, the students did not go to school to give the police chance to investigate the issue.
