On 13 September 2017 a peaceful march against Gender Based Violence (GBV) against women and children was held and started at 10am in Phola, Mpumalanga. The march started at Phola entrance proceeding to Tholulwazi and the theme colours were blue and white.
The purpose of the march was to protest the injustice and GBV that women face. Protestors demanded that women have equal rights and also wanted to bring hope to the victims of GBV. After the march, which lasted about two hours, a women’s dialogue took place called #HERSTORY.
The issues raised in the discussion were around why GBV still happens in our communities; the role women play in contributing to Gender Based Violence and patriarchal society; and how culture and religion support abuse and patriarchy. Protestors were also joined by police officers, as well as women from other structure such as Kuyozekubenini and the ANC Youth desk.
