Martha Xakaza is a 57-year-old, a strong-spirited activist who was born in Orlando East. Her father is from Lesotho and worked at a general post office delivering letters and her mother was a kitchen lady.

Julia was inspired to become an activist when she started working at Heineken in 2011 under different labour brokers. In 2017, she decided to say no to the conditions and to no longer work in those conditions. She joined Simunye Workers Forum to get assistance. The company was under Imperial, the company cut salaries, this made it difficult for her to afford everyday expenses.

She says that, as a women activist she doesn’t have much difficulties as she knows what she wants and through her courage and hard work, she got the council to agree to supply her with tools to do gardening at an unused land with her fellow comrades.
