The first day of school for the new year was on 15 February 2021. For learners at Mpumelelo Secondary School in Rethabiseng (a township in Bronkhorstspruit, east of Pretoria), it was chaos. Mpumelelo Secondary is under new management with a new principal. The preparations for learners to return to the school were very poor this year. Learners did not get any timetable of who should attend classes when, so they all went to school.
The school was fully packed. There was no social distancing and the school didn’t follow Covid-19 protocols. It was full outside and inside the school while the learners waited to be placed inside classrooms.
Some learners were even turned back home and told to come to school the following day, others decided not go home and instead they sat at the tuck shop nearby smoking.
