Welcome to the first edition of the quarterly Karibu! Health Newsletter, a supplement of Karibu that will focus on Khanya College’s work with communities. The health focus will include education and awareness, and campaigns and organising to improve quality public healthcare for everyone in South Africa. Almost 30 years after democracy, the health condition of the majority is appalling, especially amongst children, women and the youth. Many prevalent illnesses are related to poverty and social inequality. We need to know our rights and build organisations as communities to bring about peaceful change. Communities know their needs better than anyone. Let’s improve the lives of our people and hold those in power accountable.
Khanya has worked on health-related issues since 1995, and worked with non-governmental organisations, trade unions and communities. We will draw on this experience, and internationally, as the issues we face affect many all over the world.
In this first edition we highlight the work that Khanya College is doing in Eldorado Park and Kliptown. While have worked in these communities for some time to promote reading and writing and the Jozi Book Fair; this time we are focusing on health and working with community organisations. We intend to do a household survey that will provide important information about the two communities and their needs, and assist all organisations to improve our work.
