Women on Farms is an organisation that was established in Stellenbosh, Western Cape in 1996 and then later ventured to the Northern Cape in 2009 founded by Collecks Solomon. Women on Farms is a feminist organisation that advocates for the rights of women who live and work on commercial farms in the Western and Northern Cape regions.
“The organisation was formed to assist women that are in the farming industry, there was a realisation that women in this industry didn’t know their rights and they were often exploited. The organisation might mainly have its focus on women, but it also does assist men in the farming industry because should there be a man who is dismissed from the farm, and he is the breadwinner that does affect his wife and his children. it is a structured organisation that has a leadership that is elected through a vote, and they are governed by a constitution.”
“We work with different organisations including The Southern African Clothing and Textile Workers Union (SACTWU) and Mawubuye. We organise programs that deal with feminist-centred land redistribution, Gender Based Violence (GBV), labour and youth programs and train members who are mainly women during these programs.” Said Matheko Mohobo a 53-year-old member of the Women in Farms organisation who is based in Rawsonville in the Western Cape.
