Women on Farms Project is an organisation is based in Stellenbosch and Eastern Cape. The organisation was formed by Colette Solomon who in 1992 and only caters for women. She formed the organisation because of the need to build women’s leadership and protect their rights, especially women in farms. Around that time, there was a high rate of unemployment, especially amongst women. Members of the organisation includes farm workers and farm dwellers. The organisation deals with issues like land, housing, women’s health, gender-based violence and child abuse.
The members of the organisation are recruited from farm to farm and general members of the community. The members are recruited through door-to-door campaigns, Whatsapp and Facebook. They include seasonal and permanent workers. Some of the activities of the organisation includes training workers on labour rights, health rights and rights to land. Women on Farms also runs a number of campaigns, including One Woman, One Hector, which focuses on enabling women to access land. They also run campaigns such as ‘Health Tax Campaign’, ‘From 18 – 59 years’, which assists members get the social relief grants. Women on Farms works with different organisations such as Mayibuye, Water Collision, Surplus People’s Project (SPP) and many others.
