In Carletonville, minibus operators have not been adhering to measures announced by Transport Minister Fikile Mbalula’s to slow the spread of COVID-19. Minister Fikile Mbalula has said no passengers are allowed in any form of transport if they do not have face masks on. All the passengers must also be sanitised before getting into any transport, according to the transport minister.

On 25 April 2020 when observing the situation in Carletonville Hospital, Karibu! witnessed a minibus carrying patients. The patients boarded the vehicle without being sanitised, and they also were not wearing face masks. The minibus was also not sanitised before taking the patients. The vehicle was full and no social distancing was applied. The vehicle was travelling from Carletonville Hospital to Leratong and Baragwanath Hospital. Karibu! spoke to an informant at the Krugersdorp Hospital to find out more. “The patients were taken for their normal procedures of certain medical tests and scans by specialists who practice in specific areas,” said the insider who did not want to be identified for fear of losing their job.

Carletonville Hospital was also not compliant with lockdown rules and regulations. The hospital spokesperson, Mr Matabo Letsoalo declined to comment on the matter.
