In academic schools, learners have the opportunity to receive detailed education providing them with the knowledge, skills, and critical thinking abilities necessary to succeed in an increasingly complex world. A world fast relying on technology but still in dire need of the soft skills of the humanities to balance things out.
As we all know, school is more than just an academic environment, it can also feature social hubs where students interact with peers, teachers, and other members of the community. This helps to build important life skills like communication, teamwork, and conflict resolution. These skills also come about because of one important fact – schools are not the buildings where the education happens. Schools are the people themselves.
Speaking to Karibu, one learner, Oarabetse Mopasi (15) says that “education can contribute to personal growth in many ways, such as promoting independence. Education teaches individuals to take control of their lives while making informed choices for their future.”
A lot of schools in the better-off areas offer a supportive environment where students can explore their interests, develop their passions and gain experience. Through sports and other activities, students can build confidence and learn valuable life lessons. Sadly, in the majority of township schools that role is not usually fulfilled.
Most schools do provide access to resources like counselling, career guidance, and helping students navigate their academic journeys.
Schools are the heart of our community and they can help create a brighter future for ourselves and the upcoming generations.
