Tlhokomelo Child Care and Support Centre is located at 3795A Nkomoyahlaba Street in Orlando East, Soweto, and was established in the year 2000 as a non-profit organisation. Tlhokomelo was formed by two nurses and started as a home-based project assisting children with any difficulties they came across; sick people, and those who live with disabilities.
In forming the group, the nurses aimed to get the youth of Orlando and surrounding neighbourhoods involved as they noticed that the youth is struggling to find employment and funding for further education. Involving them was a strategy to keep the youth from going astray and have something to keep them busy.
There have been several campaigns the organisation participated in, including the donation of sanitary pads, offering food parcels to the community, and also being a mobile clinic within the community.
“We are very happy that the community has allowed us to be their voice and to help them with everything they need and to make sure that we deliver everything to them as expected from the organisation,” said one of the members of the organisation
