In Botshabelo, sections L, E, and D, located in Mangaung Metropolitan in the Free State, the communities are protesting by blocking the roads with stones and burning fires. The protest started on Sunday, 1 October 2023.

The residents of Botshabelo are fighting for the services like removal of garbage and the cleaning of toilets. This is after the community went to complain to the municipality and they were told that there was no diesel to fill the trucks as they don’t have the budget for it.

Some residents say they want their squatter camp to be finalized so that they can have title deeds, as basic services include water and electricity.

On Monday, 2 October 2023, the community were frightened by police hippos and were told that if they continue with their protest they will be arrested.

In most areas of Botshabelo people are still using the bucket system and portable toilets and having them removed is a problem making the community even angrier.
