This year the Cuban Federation of Women (FMC) celebrates its 60th anniversary. The FMC was formed in 1960 at the start of the Cuban revolution by the leader of the revolution, Fidel Castro, and the revolutionary feminist, Vilma Espin. The aim of the FMC was to improve the status of women, advance women’s rights, gender equity and reproductive health rights. What concrete improvements have taken place in the lives of Cuban women not only in the workplace but also in the society and in the home? What have been the achievements of the FMC and what are the lessons for building a grassroots women’s movement in SA today?
