On 5 March 2023, a man aged 28 was arrested in Kliptown by the South African Police Service (SAPS) officers for the possession of and dealing drugs. Officers received information about a drug house in Angola, a section of Kliptown.

This was after several complaints were received that drugs were being used and sold in Angola. It was also alleged that there were groups of youngsters hanging around, sometimes drinking, smoking, and making noise outside the premises until the early hours.

Residents reported to the community leaders, but nothing was done about the matter. Althea Malas said, “these drug sellers have ruined my son’s life. He was such a respectful and intelligent boy but as soon as he gave in to drugs, he no longer respects me and steals food in the house and sells it. I am glad they have been arrested.”

Illicit substances are being sold to teenagers and the residents are worried. Although the police are working alongside the concerned residents, but their leads are always hitting a dead end. Some of the residents are scared to walk around at night as some of the users would rob them and even worse rape them.

This is a huge bust. The residents are happy that the drug dealers are arrested and will likely be in jail. The SAPS encourages the community to continue reporting any individual who is violating the drug-free laws that are now instituted.

A man known only as Muhammed, and a resident at Kliptown, said he is pleased even if only a little progress is being made to clean the streets and is willing to assist and bring back what was once a community where everyone would walk around freely without having to fear the dangers that might occur.
