The Department of Health initially opened the vaccine site during covid-19. The site was opened to deal with the big volume of people coming to vaccinate at the clinic. The people were coming in numbers since they were told that they will not travel or go to work if they do not have a vaccine certificate. Children of 12 years and older were also included among those who have to get vaccinated.
Since the covid-19 restrictions have been eased, people are no longer coming to the clinic for vaccinations and while others have already been vaccinated and taken booster shots.
Now the vaccine sites are usually empty. One could find that sometimes you vaccinate one person and at other times you do not. This makes the Covid-19 statistics too low.
The department was asked by the Arekoponeng centre to come and close the vaccine centre as Arekoponeng was one of the centres in the community and now that there are fewer people for vaccinations, the centre should be closed and the Arekopaneng can get their space back. They also say that is not safe for children to be around needles because they will play with them.
Arekopaneng is one of the Orphan and Vulnerable Centre (OVC) Non-Governmental Organisations in Orange Farm. They help children keep out of the streets as they are always kept in the centre.
