Download PDFKhanya College will host its 27th annual Winter School from 14–19 June 2026 at the House of Movements in Johannesburg. Since its launch in 1999, the school has created an important space for activists and social movements to engage in political debate, discussions, skills training, solidarity, and collective struggle.
The theme for the 2026 Winter School, ‘Education for Liberation – Going Back to Our Soweto Roots,’ celebrates the College’s 40th anniversary and coincides with the 50th anniversary of the Soweto Uprising. The theme calls for a critical reflection on the current social and education system(s) that continue to reproduce poverty, unemployment, and class inequality in South Africa today.
Participants from different provinces, organisations, and sectors across the country will come together for this residential school. Activists will work and read collectively in groups strengthening networks of solidarity and collective learning. Like every year, there will be a daily newsletter – the Imbila Yesu (It is Ours) – written and produced by the activists themselves.
A key focus of the school is women’s empowerment. More than 60% of participants will be women, reflecting Khanya’s commitment to addressing gender inequality and ensuring that women in movements and organisations have access to political education, leadership development, and organising skills.
The school brings together organisations and activists working in different sectors, including: Education, Women, Health, Environment, Land, Unions and Youth.
The Khanya Winter School continues to be a safe space for political education, movement-building, and struggles for social justice and liberation.
