ACTIVIST PROFILE – Mduduzi Tshabalala


Mduduzi Tshabalala is an optimistic young person with self-motivation and community driven development. Born and bred in Sebokeng, 40km south of Johannesburg. After matriculating, Mduduzi enrolled for a Business and Financial Admin course at PC Training and Business College.

In 2009 he started a community project called ‘Botle ba Tlhaho’ Environmental Group [BBTEG].  BBTEG campaigns for a clean and better environment within communities of the Vaal Triangle area.  BBTEG was registered in 2009, and has done voluntary work since, supported by like organisations. In 2012 BBTEG began affiliating with Vaal Environmental Justice Alliance [VEJA], getting deeply involved in environmental justice struggles.

Through VEJA Mduduzi participated in community monitoring school of Benchmarks Foundation, and thus improved his activism and writing skills. Furthermore, Mduduzi started facilitating the community monitors school in 2014 hosted in the Vaal area supported by the Benchmarks Foundation and VEJA, later enrolled for Community Journalism for Beginners at UNISA.    

As an active member of the South African Water Caucus, Mduduzi was involved in the 2014/16 Social Learning class facilitated by Environmental Learning Centre at Rhodes University and was supported by Water Research Commission to write an abstract paper based on a specific Water Management Practice..

Mduduzi currently works at VEJA as a Media campaigner.
